Well Drew, ever since I was a little girl, I always dreamed of being either a fairy princess or a storage manager. The fairy princess has nicer uniforms, but being a storage manager paid better.
Actually, my husband and I opened an internet cafe in 2001, and discovered that not only could we work together in peace and harmony, we actually enjoyed it (most of the time). After the Florida hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 put a whammy on the buildings and tourism on the east coast of Florida, we sold out, took a 3-months cross country road trip vacation...came home and said "NOW what do we do with the rest of our lives?"
We considered opening another business somewhere else, since my husband had owned several construction businesses over the years, but at our ages, the price of health insurance was a big concern. So we decided that we would try working for someone else's business....and spent about a month researching on the Internet for something that we could do together. We looked at campground, MHP, apartment management, etc. But we kept coming back to storage, after all...we had rented storage ourselves throughout the years, how hard could it be to learn whatever it took to sit on the other side of the counter?
So we started sending out resume's and finally someone hired us. We are on our 2nd storage position now, and ABSOLUTELY LOVE WORKING IN STORAGE!!!! There was a lot more to learn that I had ever dreamed of, especially because we have done truck rentals at both jobs. Having to deal with delinquencies and the lien process was also a big shock as I had no idea that people didn't pay their storage rent on time.
But I enjoy the "people" aspect of the job, and I really feel that we are providing a valuable service to customers who are going through upheavals in their lives. So it feels to me like it is a rewarding job. I also get to work with my hubby, and we still spend most of our days in peace and harmony.
So I think we did more research and strategizing with a goal of becoming self-storage managers, not because of quirky fate. I'm just happy that we made the right decision for our career path at this time in our lives.
