Lightbulb Tossing Around a Business Idea (Parking/Vehicle Storage-Related)

    Hey folks,

I heard there was an over/under bet on how long I could stay away from the forum. What was it set at? 1 month? 2 months?

I hope everyone is doing well! It's good to be back on here for a bit.

I am only about shin-deep in my master's program, but I'm already starting to think of some planning-related business ideas. The first involves a kind of parking/vehicle storage hybrid business model.

So, I'm taking a little bit of a roll call. Who here is ...

    - Located in an urban area (preferably one with difficult street parking and/or expensive off-street parking)
    - Offers car storage. Not talking about RV's, boats or specialty, but just those of you who store good old-fashioned autos.

Thanks! Looking forward to reconnecting and seeing your responses.

    Welcome back John!

OK, I am not in an urban area, however there is a good sized university here, and students with cars have found my rates better than parking rates on campus. (The campus is only about a 20 minute walk from here.) So they park here, and when they need their car, they just walk on over. In addition, my facility vehicle storage is safer than parking on campus, as campus-parked cars are routinely vandalized.

    HERE! LOL
Hi John nice to see you!
Our zoning is a BEAR here. Have MANY cars & trucks etc. almost 70 parking spots. ALWAYS FULL. Once in a while all of a sudden 4 spots are open, owner panics "SHOULD WE LOWER THE RENT?!"
My answer. "MY JOB AS I UNDERSTAND IT IS TO MAKE YOU MONEY RIGHT? OKAY LET'S WAIT THE USUAL 2-3 DAYS FOR ME TO GET THEM SOLD BEFORE WE GET SILLY." I am NEVER disrespectful in the way or tone, but I am sure he finds me ANNOYINGLY PROFITABLE at times

This is exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks, geraldine. What a great opportunity! Do you mention "parking" or "car storage" in your marketing to the students?

Not sure how many student tenants you have, but have you ever thought about running a shuttle a couple different times a day between your facility/lot and the campus?

Very cool, Bill & Diane. Just so I understand, the people with the cars & trucks aren't really storing as much as they're parking? They come get their cars at least once a week or so and then drive them back to their spots?

Shuttles can be an awesome idea. For instance if there is a large hospital, a casino, university etc. near by. But I would think it would have to be some thing substantial other wise it could wind up being a loss.

Oh no a lot are businesses so we sell them quite large units. Most even have an extra smaller unit for personal use. Offering parking up in certain areas can lead to MANY LEADS.
May I ask are you viewing adding parking as a "PARK & RIDE" type of thing?
