Lift gate or sliding gate?
If you could change your gate which design would you use and why?

I see a lot of votes, but not many opinions.
Come on people - which is better and WHY!!!
The reason I'm asking is that our gate is on about it's last go round. It may only be able to take one or two more hits and it wont be worth fixing again.

I prefer selling lift gates as opposed to slide gates for a couple of reasons:
1) maintenance: the lift style have viewer moving pieces and parts; therefore, fewer components that are likely to break down. Also, vertical gates are less likely to be impacted by the elements, i.e. a wheel icing over or getting stuck in mud.
2) aesthetics: the lift style simply look better, more professional and better curb appeal. I realize slide gates have become more decorative but the majority of users go with the chain link style, which look industrial whereas modern storage facilities often look more like banks.
The lift style is a big more expensive but only marginally so when you amortize the cost over the life of the gate. But that's just me.

I prefer the Lift/Vertical Gates because they need less space to operate while the Slide and Swing Gates need a fair amount of dedicated space to open.

We have a lift gate here - old place we had a chain link one that we opened manually. The only problem with this one seems to be that tailgaters are always clipping it. Just recently had it replaced - around $3000 - the company of the driver who clipped it paid for the new gate.
I think I like it ok - but there are times I wish we had the slide type.

troy - we have a sliding gate right now - in the last three years it has been "clipped" 4 times - each time it has been folded almost in half. One more time and I don't think it will be repairable! That's why I am asking these questions.
I am leaning toward a folding lift gate. I talked to the vertigate people in Vegas and really loved their system. Just waiting to get pricing so I can talk to the owners.

We have the sliding gate, it has only been hit once, and it did much more damage to the vehicle then it did to the gate, actually my husband got the gate back on track, so that didn't cost anything...but the vehicle had a nice big dent in it. So I guess I would have to vote on a big thick sturdy sliding gate. That kind seems to be the repeat winner in the battle of "vehicle versus gate"
