does anyone else have condensation problems in their storage buildings?

Too hot and dry here in the deserts of Southern California.

almost every year, the only way to prevent it is climate controlled storage. We don't have problems in those.

For you in hot areas, I, too, was concerned about that when we started here. We interviewed all the other managers in the area and found that those without climate controlled didn't seemed too concerned. Some people, like those who have pharmaceuticals, are required to have climate control. But I've learned that almost all other things do well in the heat, but it's the lack of humidity that causes wood to split.

We are in a hot area. An antiques dealer said, and we pass it along to our customers, "It's not the heat, it's the lack of humidity" the may damage their furniture. Therefore, we encourage our guests to put a bucket of water in their unit, near their wood (antique) furniture, along with an ounce of bleach. The bleach will prevent attracting little four legged animals. They need to replace the bleach once a month, and powdered bleach is good for this. We also recommend that they put a layer of furniture polish or furniture oil on their wood things prior to moving them in.

When guests are really concerned about their furniture, including their white couch, we give them a 10x20 plastic sheet. Or, you can sell it them one.

On other words, when someone says, "I need a climate controlled unit", ask them why.

I get that all the time - someone down the road has tried to convince them that they need climate controlled, then you start talking to them to find out what they are storing - no that 20 year old TV wont be hurt by the heat. Do you have a vast record collection = no, how about expensive candles - no. Well you can save a bunch of money storing with us!

Good tip abut the water, but around here it better be a 5 gal bucket! With temps in the 100's everyday and the humidity in the 5 to 10% that bucket wont last long.

I have heard that simple ventilation and air circulation can prevent condensation in metal buildings. Do your buildings have vents? If so, and you still have condensation problems, see if exhaust fans will help.

In Nebraska the inside of our roofs have a thin layer of insulation to prevent condensation issues. I wish we humidity at 5%. We are usually around the 50-60% mark.
