Default Sliding Doors vs. Roll Up Doors

Has anyone used sliding doors instead of roll up doors? I just started noticing Coleman Sideslider advertisments in the storage magazines. Looks like a great concept!

Sliding doors were real common 30 - 40 years ago when self storage started. They had many problems, mainly weatherseal issues, rodent and bug ease of entry issues and then eventually performance issues. If you've ever operated sliding doors on a barn you'll know what I'm talking about. If you find some of these old original self storages out there with these doors on them you will also have to admit how ugly that they are compared to the bright, clean roll up doors of today.

I went to the guys web site today - although they look pretty snazzy I think they would be less secure and hard to seal against weather.

Woodward, Autodoc - I kind of thought the same thing. Good concept, but many potential issues...

I'm stickin' with my roll up doors. But either one beats swing doors in my opinion.

Wink Saw Them at Nashville and Yesterday In San Antonio.

As I understand, they are currently engineered for Climate Controlled applications only, for those obvious reasons already mentioned...

Default TSSA Meeting

John

I know that is off topic for this thread, but how was the mood at the TSSA meeting. Did you get to hear Ray Wilson's presentation? Does Ray think things are still basically OK in the Lone Star state?

Thanks,
MisterJim444

Wink TSSA on the Riverwalk...

Jim:

Actually, we were coming back through from a training loop to some of our stores in the area and only caught the trade show. The mood in the expo hall was upbeat, and did not seem to indicate a somber tone in the meetings themselves... in fact, everyone we talked to on the floor seemed quite positive!

The only franchise suffering in Texas right now is the DALLAS COWBOYS!

Default Thanks

John:

Appreciate your impressions. We have been very lucky as an industry over the years. We all need to just keep an objective perspective as we crawl over the bigger and bigger bumps in the road ahead.

All my best,
Jim

Default as for sliders...

I was at the TSSA show in San Antonio and talked to the guy at the booth. I work for a construction company who builds self storage so I wanted to see what was out there. From what I could tell, these doors would be perfectly fine for indoor storage such as climate control, or even conversions, but for a drive up building.... not so much.
