Office make over
Anyone ever tried to do a complete office renovation (complete gut out and start over) while still conducting day to day operations?
This is the task we will be taking on ourselves over the next few months (with the owners blessing).
Should be interesting.
The new carpets are on order from Interface - they made us a smoking deal at the EXPO!!!
Today I started removing some of the popcorn ceiling - what a messy job!!!
And for those of you safety people out there - yes we did test for asbestos - we are clean. Just very very dusty!! (Cough cough cough....
)
I have about half the ceiling done so far - I'll finish it this weekend and then paint the ceiling.
Next step is to start building the desks and front counter - then I get to RIP AND DESTROY the existing counter system - I can't wait for that day - I hate this office!!!!Wayne

I will be taking pictures during the process -- it will probably take all summer to finish, but I will post before and after.

Ohmygosh Wayne!!
WHY??? Why would you do that to yourself?!
Been there kinda. We had a problem here that we could not trace forever in our home/office areas. A small thing called water intrusion. Every winter water everywhere! Every January start ripping out sheetrock etc. Cough, gasp, wheeze! Hack!
We finally found the source (I hope) last year. This year we haven't seen any telltale cracking in the ceiling joints, no drips on our heads, it is a good sign.
You have my utmost sympathies. To answer your questions about operations running, it ain't easy.
When we first opened our office building wasn't completed, but we had permits building by building. We operated out of a storage unit. We moved the copier, strung some phone line etc. out to the first one closest to the office.
You may want to think about doing the same. It makes life so much easier and then at least Bev would be out of the dust and debris you're raining down upon her.
GOOD LUCK my friend!

P.S. I know some great sheetrockers and mudders if you need referrals. And my tile guy is awesome!Gina 6k

You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough!
I am not an attorney, just an experienced manager who is willing to share what I have learned. Your thoughts, practices or opinions may vary and neither of us may be right.

thanks Gina -- we are leaving all the sheetrock in place -- everything else is going!
All of the outdated cream colored Formica counter tops - outahere!!!
All of the popcorn ceilings - outahere!!!
The desk that has you facing away from the gate and customers - outahere!!!
The 2 night stands holding up the copier - outahere!!!
The nasty looking florescent lighting - outahere!!!
We have been waiting and planing for 3 years to do this and now we have the go-ahead so we are proceeding before they change their minds.
We had thought about doing the temp office thing, but with no heat or A/C out there that would be worse - plus I would have to run a bunch of extension cords which would probably be a fire hazard!!!
Beverly (and all the customers) will have to put up with my dust!

Office redo
Hey, Wayne, I'm sure that there is a marketing oportunity here somewhere. Maybe "After all these years of watching me doing nothing, if you come in and rent during my office redo, we will let you assist and get a 10% discount for all the months that it takes to do this project."
Or......?

Hope you are hiding your CPU in a safe place!!!! Nothing like a little dusk to make the old hard drive act up. Look forward to seeing your pics.
Have fun.

Hey Jim -- if a little dust was a bad thing for computers there would not be a single working computer in this dusty valley!! Two things we do have here is wind and dust so I am only adding a small amount to the overall mess.
And Bob -- I have thought about a move in re-model special. Not sure what it will be yet, but I know I'll come up with something.Wayne

Run a Make-Over Contest
Wayne
How about teaming up with a local newspaper to run a "Make-Over" Contest? Newspaper agrees to run free contest ads featuring your self storage facility as a trade-off with you for the prize of 2 or 3 months free rent on a 10 x 10 or 10 x 15. Local residents are asked to submit pictures of the stuff they need to store and Why getting a free unit would help them with their Make Over. I know it is corny, but you just might be able to talk your local newspaper into the joint promo. The angle for the paper is in promoting classified ad sales and you win from the free press. You could also through in a discount special for anyone who submits an entry. Just a crazy idea!

I say the simplest way to keep a list of that...
Do you keep a 'don't rent' list?
