Question Dealing with upset customers and life events

Hello Everyone:
Managers and staff almost have to be grief counselors at times when a customer comes in the middle of a life event. Can you tell me how you handle it If you offer any guidelines or techniques to staff on calming and reassuring customers: What techniques seem to work best? What phrases do you like to use? Which methods have you tried and discarded? Not idle questions here, this is an idea for an article. Hope to hear lots.
Thanks for your input.
Elaine
