    Default Bed Bugs

    Hi everyone!

I have a question regarding how to answer people's questions about bed bugs. Lately we've been getting reports that some storage facilities near us have been infested with beg bugs. We've even had a couple of customers come in and ask us if we've had any problems with bed bugs.

My question is, how do I answer this? I don't think we'd even KNOW if we had bed bugs unless someone moved out and reported it. I tell people that we have had no complaints about bed bugs and to my best knowledge we are bed bug free. Would this be the correct response? I don't want to scare people away, but at the same time I don't want to promise something that I am unsure about.

And on that topic... how do we address the situation if someone DOES bring bed bugs in to our facility? Has anyone had this problem before?

    Thanks so much!

This is a concerning subject that I've thought about every now and then. I always think its best to know and get your FACTs clear and straight on issues like pests. Also saying that you've had no reported problems is accurate and true. I'd even go further to set up an awareness and prevention program amongst your STAFF. That way you can say, "Our staff are trained in the prevention and identification of BB's" as a sales item ... or something to that nature.

If you do have a problem that arises you can always target the locker where it arose and fumigate or bring in prevention measures.

Overall, it's a tough one but can be treated no different then are other pests like vermin and such. Have prevention and awareness that you can speak to. If a problem arises, target and attack the problem hard. And speak the truth and if you uncomfortable with your truth then you should solve whatever is making you uncomfortable.

Great question as the beg bug problem is being touted as mushrooming into a huge issue in future. There's gotta be a money angle on that for pest control somewhere.

Unfortunately, I've dealt with this....very uncomfortable situation.

Verminators, (as I call them), use extreme heat and pesticides to kill these pests. If they are in any units, they can be found where...(GROSS!) the most human skin will be...ie: mattresses, boxes or bags of linens, etc.

...and if you ever find yourself in a motel room, and you feel like you need to check for them...get a lighter, and run it under the seam of the mattress...listen for crackling...

    Once again...gross...I know...

    GOOD LUCK!
The customer isn't always right, the trick is making them think they are!

Should you hear the crackling sound before, or after, the room is ablaze?

Yes they are. Friends of mine had their apartment get infested before moving from CO to UT and they ended up throwing 90% of everything away because they just could not get rid of them all. Got in the vacuum, beds, clothes, washer and dryer (can't just wash em out) and that just caused them to spread more. I hope to never experience this.

We did have termites once, Just in one unit really, ate all the customers books. We assume she brought them in as we didn't see any other units damaged besides hers. Still, had to get treatment for them.

Thanks everyone for your quick responses and advice. I know they can be difficult to get rid of so I have my fingers crossed that my storage facility will be spared from the bed bug infestation!
