    Default Winter Hours

Hi Everyone! I have a dilemma and am doing some research to find the answers. I am the Operations Manager/Marketing Manager/Site Manager/Only Employee for a 300 unit storage facility. We have a small operating budget so I really cannot get paid more than the 45 hours a week I work at this point. The dilemma I have is our hours. 10-5:30. I get here at 9:30 to get the system set up, overnight payments processed, letters printed, make certain everything is up to par, etc before opening at 10. Well, the past month I have noticed an influx of early morning patrons waiting for me in the parking lot. I've had a lot of complaints about our hours being too late. So, I mentioned to the owner that we should consider earlier hours. He's being great about it and considering but I have to come up with a lot of reasoning behind it to get his 100% vote. My thought is, lets make the hours 8-4. Of course this will give me a little more hours unless he wants to hire me a part time person, which, he does not yet. I have made a huge difference in sales and we have few people if ever in default. We didn't even have an auction last month. Sales are up but not as high as he wants. But they will be. It takes a while to turn a place around in a slow economy. In any case, we get very few customers late in the day. Maybe one or two a week. But, I am certain that we can make arrangements with people for Saturdays. We are only open 4 hours on Saturdays. What do you all think? Should we change to winter hours 8-4 or something to that effect? Thanks!

Wow, that is just the opposite of us. We are thinking about not opening until 9 a.m. as it is really quiet around here until at least then. I come in from 8-5 Mon thru Fri, and I have a girl that comes in 8-5 on Saturdays. For sure, my Saturdays are going to change hours to 9-4 as business completely dies after about 3 p.m. and doesn't get going until at least 9 a.m. We also run a construction business out of this office and that is why I have always been in at 8 a.m.--contractors start early, especially in the California summers.
Have you ever stopped to think and forgotten to start again?

Thanks, Reebee! We are in the Midwest and although we have a property management business on the side, the manager and owner are rarely on site so the only customers I see for the most part are self-storage. Hey, I am a west coaster, too (PNW) and boy do I miss it! I think if I were on the west coast again the hours would be more conducive to how laid back everyone is there. It's such a different culture here with farming and manufacturing being the two largest industries. Which is probably why so many are early birds. The town basically dies as soon as the sun sets =D And when winter hits, well, it is dark very early (around 5) and on snowy days nothing happens in the evening. Spring hits and I think people come out of hibernation for a while and tend to stay up later with the late-sitting sun. It's definitely different here (not in a bad way, just not what I am used to). I plan to learn all I can and move back to the west coast and open my own facility (or two or three). I love the industry and the diversely wonderful and eclectic crowd it draws in.

I open at 9am and start the computer and run the daily charger then. The daily paperwork gets done over the next 2 to 4 hours along with regular work.

Hi Denny, The Owner decided we would go to winter hours in November. 8-4 which is fantastic considering that week sunset occurs within 30 minutes after closing. I'm pretty certain if we aren't getting many (if any) customers right now after 4 then it will be worth it going to early hours for the winter. Can you send some of your warmth here from November to March, Denny? We won't ask for much, 60s will more than suffice.
