  • What one thing or tradition makes the holidays come alive for you?

Our daughter asked her children this question and was completely blown away by their responses. So I thought it might be an interesting, light-hearted conversation for us as well.

Q: What is the one thing that when it comes out of a box, or occurs that makes the holiday come alive for you?

Spending the entire day with my 2 girls and my 3 grandchildren on Christmas Day.
And then on the Saturday after Christmas we have Christmas Part 2 with my siblings, nieces and nephews!!!

When I hear this song, it is officially Christmas for me!!

The non stop holiday movies on Hallmark Channels. I record the ones I haven't seen before and all the new ones that they tell me just came out. For a change, it is all about good and great things and happiness. And yes, I do keep tissues close if needed.

Putting on our all day Christmas pajamas and watch "24 Hours of A Christmas Story" and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation".

This year we're doing that and then going to see "Star Wars: The Last Jedi".

Hmmm. Great question Gina. I think it is when the Christmas lights start appearing on the homes as we drive. It certainly doesn't come from store decor as they now start that the day after the 4th of July (yes, sarcasm).

As I have gotten older and the kids are grown, it is getting harder for me to find it. Even two weeks ago when I was at Disney, and it was all decorated, I wasn't feeling it.

Sorry to be a bummer here, but the commercialism of it depresses me.

Other than something for each grandchild, I'm not into it either. The commercialism has overtaken the true spirit. You won't find me out fighting hoards at shopping malls, that's for sure.

This year again will be very quiet for my DH and I. We opted to not even put up the minimal decorations we have here. It's sad. My favorite time used to be sipping a cup of tea or cocoa in the dark, just watching the lights twinkle on the tree as music played softly in the background. Stopping and taking time to appreciate who is surrounding us, and that makes any day a holiday in my book. <3

These two comments, from MCG and Gina, are exactly why I watch the holiday movies on Hallmark because they do their best to show how it used to be.
I feel so much better after one of those movies.
Like Gina said, I don't fight hoards anywhere anymore. I do 2-3 months worth of grocery shopping at 6 am and all my other shopping on line at Amazon Prime every chance I get. One of my biggest pet peeves of having to deal with other people when out at the stores is how they will enter or exit in front of me and then stop right in the freakin' way while they look for keys or get on their phone or scratch their butt. Save your diggin' and talkin' for after you move to the side or away.

The commercialism of Christmas has ruined it for me too. I usually don't start to feel Christmas-y until Christmas Eve, and even then it doesn't last long. I suppose the main thing that makes me realize it's Christmas is when Walmart closes for 36 hours. My wife and I don't exchange gifts, so the only person I really have to buy for is my grown son (who still gives me a "Santa" list that I ignore because his gift is usually bought earlier in the year!)
Dear Lord, please help me be the kind of person my dog thinks I am!

This is the first year of my life I haven't had decorations up. We're not decorating as anything out of a normal routine is too stressful for my elderly mom in-law. It's just different. And yes, the Hallmark channel and a box of tissues nearby is a good thing and a reminder of how things should be. It's all about making the best for those around you and those that you love.

So let's change the conversation a tad; what is the one thing you do for another person or organization each holiday season that gives you a warm fuzzy?

I'll start, when we first started dating, our first Christmas approached fast and we "gave each other" items we purchased and then donated to the rescue mission. Honestly, it was really nice seeing those items put to use as we'd drive around for weeks afterwards and see them. So that started our tradition of hands on doing for others, holiday season or not. It feels good to help your fellow humans no matter what time of year it is.

My daughter says it's the food rolling out.... Cookies, rolls with all kinds of good things inside, fresh pasta, and meatballs.... The time we spend together "making Christmas". It always amazes me when my kids even older ones love spending days at home just hanging around! I feel like the biggest success at that point.. If I have done nothing else right I know my kids love spending time with me!

Well then, come January, when the first excuse for non payment or you catch a sleeper in a unit or have to deal with figuring out if you should rent to a person or just overlook the joint behind their ear and the beer can in their hand, you will be "experienced" and have to learn how to swim...
