I love the idea of storage facilities as recycling drop off points. (Of course, that's easy for me to say because I'm the recycler, not the facility manager/owner who has to deal with it.) But I still love the idea!
Here's why. Every city I've lived in offers curbside recycling, but few apartment complexes participate. As a renter and an avid recycler, that makes it really tough. I often have to spend quite a bit of time on a Saturday loading up my car and driving to drop off recycling somewhere -- and depending on the driving distance, it makes me question whether or not I helped or hurt my carbon footprint.
Anyway, if the nearest self-storage facility offered a recycling drop off, that would certainly increase visibility and image. People like me would even pay a minor fee -- $10-20 a month -- just to have permission to drop off there if it were close.
The facility wouldn't necessarily have to accept cardboard, plastic, glass and aluminum to be useful. Even if the facility accepted batteries, printer cartridges, cell phones and other things that shouldn't be thrown in the garbage, that would be a huge help. In fact, that's exactly what
this facility has started doing at its 13 locations.
So, how many of you out there use your facilities or allow them to be used as part of a recycling campaign? Anyone considered it or is considering it?
