Against a Homeless Shelter?
This Plano, Texas, facility is.

Apparently, they're not the only business against it, though.
Would you come out against a homeless shelter being built next to you?

Re: Against a Homeless Shelter?
We have a homeless shelter, literally, right around the corner from us. It's good and bad.
The bad should be obvious, but the good is that due to the unit size mix we have, it helps with the occupancy of our smaller units. Since we're pretty diligent with our security here, there is generally not a problem with people trying to live in their units, even though they're living out of their units. We just try to set the ground rules strict and early with them so things don't get out of hand.
Surprisingly enough, some of them are our best paying customers. We get a larger proportion of them going to auction, but given how overbuilt the facility is on our 5x5 units, this isn't too much an issue.

Re: Against a Homeless Shelter?
We are the closest facility to some of the shelters in Stockton. A lot of our small size units are rented by those who are in the shelters by
I would much rather have the shelter by me than who we have now.
This is around the corner from where we are

Re: Against a Homeless Shelter?
Last facility we manage had its share of "living out of" with strong ground rules.
About 6 am the alarms went off; Fire Alarms. The sprinkler system did what it was suppose to do, it put the fire out. The after effects – 63 units with water damage, one tenant with his worldly belonging destroyed, a couple of the tenant were out of the country, several out of state, one couple we had to call PD to have them removed they crawled over the fence after hours, tried to force entry into our apt and claimed they lost 500K worth of antiques, most were excellent to work with.
We were lucky, the building was two stories and the incident was on the ground floor.
I know, we take the good along with the bad

Re: Against a Homeless Shelter?
I haven't checked ours for about a year, but last time I did we had something like 367 registered sex offenders within 5 miles of our facility...I think there are several halfway houses nearby. Also, several have to live out of the weekly motels, which are also within a mile of us. Also the 2 jails
3 of them rented from us.Last edited by TheHive; 11th August 2010 at 11:30 PM. Reason: not complete
