    Talking Great Rivalries in Self-Storage

As a diehard fan of Ohio State Buckeye football, I can't wait to watch them put it to Michi .. Michi ... that state up north tomorrow for the seventh straight year. (Again, that's for you, astro.)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michiga...otball_rivalry

Right now, Auburn and Alabama are going at it, too. Come to think of it, There are several other great rivalry games this weekend.

Outside of sports, there are some great corporate rivalries: Pepsi Vs. Coke, Ford Vs. GM, Windows Vs. Mac (or IBM/IBM-compatible Vs. Apple), Anheuser-Busch Vs. Miller, McDonald's Vs. Wendy's ... I could go on and on.

This all has me wondering about some of the rivalries in self-storage. Can you think of some notable competitions within the industry? The examples could be among the "big guys" -- the big national chains -- or maybe as something small as one independent facility and another one down the street.

So let's hear your rivalry tales, and let's see who has the best one. And if you are a participant in you rivalry example, please maintain a modicum of respect for the competitor.

Well in the PS vs the world front ... I give them kudos for their ads as whenever they run we get someone who calls and says, 'i saw your ad on tv about the ... promo'. It's great marketing for the industry and the best part the nearest PS is 3 hours away at best ... I respect that

Hey JCarlisle ...I too am a Buckeye fan .....lived in Columbus many years.
How about you? Are you from Ohio?

I would have to think that Public Storage would be a rival for most of us. They are everywhere and have great national exposure and recognition.

John, the only great storage rivalry that I am aware of is here on SST. That would be The Carolinas versus California.

Also, as you continue to use that vile language, I am forced to impose rule # 5, and ban you from posting on SST for at least one week, unless Michigan can somehow win.

Go ahead and try me, astro. By the way, good game yesterday! 37-7!

But back to self-storage rivalries. It sounds like Public Storage is a rival of everyone, maybe a bit like the New York Yankees are everyone's rival in baseball?

What are the elements of a business rivalry? Is it that one of the companies traditionally has a lot of power and influence?

I would think that geographic proximity would promote rivalry in this business. Because location is so important, the big rival is the guy down the street. Or maybe I'm wrong on that?

I have an ugly rivalry with one of my local competitors. Every time I start a new Craigslist campaign, he starts his own to downplay mine and make it look bad in some way.

It's sad that this is his only way to "compete" with me, because his customer service is lacking and I end up with a lot of his customers leaving to come here!

Otherwise, I get along very well with the rest of my local competitors. Even the PS less than a mile up the street!

Only friendly competition here, I know all the managers within a five mile radius and do my best to maintain a cordial relationship with them. The only rivalry between us is carried out by the owners of the various facilities. We all get a chuckle out of the things they do as good business practices to show who is who at the local country clubs. Life is too short to constantly try to get the upper hand on the other guy, I merely treat customers with the respect they show me and keep this facility as clean and secure as I can. They in turn refer their friends and family to me and I reap the rewards. I don't exaggerate claims of the latest and greatest in storage, or inflate figures of occupancy and income to impress others.
    The End Is Near!
