Storage Wars
I know that Storage Wars is helping to increase our auction sales, but I think it is also helping to increase our break ins. Our area is experiencing more storage break ins than we had in the past. I'm a little concerned about the criminals taking it one more step and realizing that we have the cash from the auctions in our office. An of course the economy has a hand in all the problems we are experiencing, but now the theives know where to come and get merchandise to pawn or sell thanks to the new show about auctions. Has anyone else noticed an increase in break ins in your area?

I've moved this thread to the "General Storage Chat" forum.
I haven't noticed any increase at my facility, but in 25 yrs. I haven't had a single break-in, so even 1 would be alarming! In no way affiliated with Storman software.

Re: Storage Wars
No sign of that here either although I am in the same boat as Storman with no break ins in the almost 9 years I have been here!

Re: Storage Wars
We have had 3 break ins since the show aired. I have worked in Atlanta, Charleston and Reno. No problems in the big cities. This location is in a small town about 8 miles from Augusta, GA.

Re: Storage Wars
I'm sorry to hear about the break-ins, those are disconcerting.
As Gina types this one-handed while knocking on her head (wood) simultaneously, we have never had a break-in either and we opened this location in May 1997. I don't want to jinx our luck especially in Leprechaun month. I'd rather have the Luck of the Irish with us.
I do have one piece of advice for EVERYONE handling any extreme amount of cash. Send someone or close the office and deposit that cash IMMEDIATELY! Never keep enough around your office to tempt anyone.
When the auction is over & the office is cleared out, lock the door and go to the bank. If that is not possible, ask ownership to install signage and a drop safe or anything else you can think of. You, the manager's safety is NUMBER ONE in the importance levels. If someone tries to rob you, give them the damned money! Heck, tie it up in a pretty package if you have time.
Honestly though, instead of breaking into units hoping to hit a jackpot or robbing a facility post-auction, the criminals would do better going after the seasoned buyers where the real money is. But then again, knowing what I know about those guys that carry around the big bankrolls, I personally wouldn't mess with them!

Re: Storage Wars
My auctions are on Weds and I go to the bank immediately afterwards, as we have had no break ins since I have been there and none since the show aired I can say not experienced that here. Thanks to the show I do, as we all do get many calls about auctions and my first reply is "Are you watching to much TV?" My first auction since the show is next week and I hear from my comps that they are getting over 100 ppl so I will be attending a comps auction before mine, its ok I am welcomed!

Re: Storage Wars
The break ins may be simply due to a bad economy rather than the television show.
By the way, I got my customized toilet paper today!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Storage Wars
No recent break-ins that I know of in my area. There were 2 last summer - at the same facility! They were before the Storage War show.

Re: Storage Wars
We unfortunately just had a 'rash' of about 5 break-in's, it had been a long time since the other 'rash' when I began, personally I don't think it has anything to do w/the show, just overall low-income area + bad-economy, plus more than likely drug-addicts, etc. Still p'o's me and stressed-me out to no end......very upsetting. And thankfully we don't take cash, used to bug me, but now I'm VERY thankfully w/all of the armed robberies we have in our city, terrifying, I've begun locking my office door for safety b/c even if we don't take cash, robbers don't know that initially and they may already be 'hyped-up' wanting money and here I sit, maybe to be kidnapped to get to my ATM? Who know's, hence the locked door (and for other reasons good perhaps too)...............
BUT, instead today I'm dealing w/an on/off 'situation' w/my sole trouble customers who I've bent over backwards for - BUT that is not important enough to write a book about, lol. AND it's a beautiful Friday afternoon, perfect weather, mean people will not ruin my lovely day and weekend! I refuse! Hope you all have a great weekend and rest of your Friday!
