Default 9/11: How did it change your facility?

We all know security tightened up across the nation after that tragic day. How was your self-storage operation affected by 9/11?

The absolute requirement for a photo ID to rent. Additionally, more reliance on "gut feeling" regarding people coming in the door. Bad feeling, sorry, no vacancies.

I know that one of our facilities in New Jersey was used by the terrorists to store things for the 9/11 event.

Since that time must have photo id's that are still valid not expired, a minimum of two valid contact numbers not living with you, current employer and their #, no access past 10 PM, unless registered in a business name.

If we set the unit up via fax, you must come in person within 1 week and sign off and present yourself in person for the original paperwork. If you do not, we immediately send out an eviction notification. No if, and's or butt's. (Nigerian schemes and fraud forwarding mail prevention)

If your activities onsite look suspicious we will report you to the police.

Now, are all managers eyes open and routinely check for all of this? I doubt it.

As with all companies, some employees are there just to occupy space and pickup a paycheck. They aren't concerned with the smaller finer details. Criminals count on that.

But, those of us that care are always safeguarding our company, tenants and our country when we can.

David, I believe that the terrorists used Space Station (since bought by U-Store-It/CubeSmart) for the WTC bombing, not the 9/11 attack.

It has been so long, you are probably correct. WTC does sound more accurate now that I think about.
