Default Self Storage vs Mini

I was recently asked what the difference is between a mini storage and self storage. At Wikipedia.com "mini" is associated with self storage as an archaic version of self storage. And that self storage began as "Self Service Storage". I also find that a converted warehouse is often referred to as a mini storage facility. So, does anyone know what defines either description?

Default Thet're Synonyms

JJ,

Wickipedia is correct - the two are synonomous. "Mini Storage" is more 70's and the term got a bad rep because of poorly-built facilities with ugly orange doors. "Self Storage" is the more modern term and the hope is it brings to mind more modern facilities with well-built, user-friendly facilities with security and tenant convenience in mind. "Mini Storage" is more reminiscent of the "build it and they will come" era. I believe that "Self Storage" denotes the mature era - more thought-out and built with the advice of professional expertise. Converted warehouses are usually "Climate Controlled Self Storage" with an attempt to keep temperature and humidity within a limited range conducive to safer storage of personal property - less damage from mold and temperature extremes. "Self Storage" is the sexier, more politically correct term for modern facilities. Some even like to work "Storage Systems" into their names.

Default

We started business in 1987 as Mini-Storage (I always hated that moniker, it didn't give you a sense of value), then in 2001 went to Self-Storage and from 2007 all of our advertising, print, truck lettering, signage, etc. has been just Storage.

In the past 21 yrs. the public has been properly trained as to what we sell when they pass our facility. Back in the day there needed to be a little more clarity when the concept was new.
