Hey Managers (or Owners Looking to Train Managers), You'd Better Check This Out.
If you've never met or worked with Mel Holsinger--a moderator here on SST, a colorful guy, and a friend of mine--let me tell you, you're missing out. And if you have, you can attest to how fun he is. He's also the president and CEO of Professional Self Storage Management.
Mel is leading the Management Workshop, Friday, March 16, from 8-11:30 a.m. at the Inside Self-Storage World Expo at Paris Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas.
This session will take attendees through a typical day in the life of a manager, teaching the everyday issues to which facility operators are exposed. Goals are for managers to learn ...
• How to identify and schedule your daily activities
• Marketing and advertising (it’s more than you think)
• The importance of the telephone, even in this era of technology
• The value of delivering customer service
• How to deal with delinquent customers
• Real-life case studies that will help you avoid operational pitfalls
Of course, there's Q&A to address your specific concerns.
I'd could go on, but I'll let others jump in and see if Mel is around to respond to any further comments or questions. The ability to register for this workshop should be live on the ISS Expo website any day now.

Re: Hey Managers (or Owners Looking to Train Managers), You'd Better Check This Out.
Hi John,
Thank you for the glowing review and I promise I will try to live up to the expectations. This session is a great tool for the new manager, a manager who may not have had any formal training or is looking to improve one or more areas of their job, and even for owners who might want to really know how much their managers actually do during a typical day.
We try to have some fun, always willing to take on questions, and if I can send you home with just one new tool to use it will be well worth your while.
I look forward to seeing many of you then.Mel Holsinger, President

Attending Mel's Workshop alone is worth sending your manager to Vegas in March in addition to all the other benefits of attending an EXPO. Mel has "Been There - Done That" and it comes across in his down to earth Manager Training sessions. I have had many clients' managers attend and they all rave about the practical, common sense and budget conscious tips and suggestion that Mel shares. Sending your manager to this workshop will be the best dollar for dollar investment that you can make in 2012.

I understand that many of you great managers (which by the way in my opinion is 99.9% of you) will not be able to attend the EXPO in March but for the one's that are able, if you were able to attend this workshop I would love to get your input as to what you would want most in the time frame alloted (3 1/2 hours) to help you do your job better and be more successful. Sometimes having been in this business for so long we tend to get into "tunnel" thinking as to what is important, you on the front lines have a better perspective so I would like to get your feedback.
Thanks to all and I hope you had a very Merry Christmas and are now planning on a very successful and wonderful New Year.Mel Holsinger, President

Hey Mel,
Two-part question to get everyone thinking ...
1. What is the best way, in your opinion, to motivate a manager to do the best job possible and be agressive (but also friendly in terms of customer service) in sales?
2. What is the best way for managers to motivate themselves, to develop some of that intrinsic motivation?

Re: Hey Managers (or Owners Looking to Train Managers), You'd Better Check This Out.
Mel,
I know managers that have been through your course and the difference between a well trained manager and one not so well trained is dramatic. Any owner that wants 2012 to be better than 2011 (and who doesn't?) and really wants to see a professional and financial improvement for their self storage facility really must consider registering their managers for this course.
For those owner/operators looking to take their facility or portfolio to the next level and wish to make positive changes in their operations for 2012 and beyond, they should seriously consider taking advantage of the Owner/Operators Executive Workshop, our first ever at ISS. This intensive session will review, in detail, all aspects of effectively managing self storage assets from an owner/operators vantage point.
Look forward to seeing everyone in Vegas!

I appreciate the kind words, and I agree, that Executive Workshop should be attended by everyone in a supervisory role. If we expect our managers to perform well we as leaders need to also have the tools to help them, I for one know that every year it is more challenging to motivate and help our teams in the field and I look forward to the information that will be provided.
