    Thumbs up Groupon

Is anyone here familiar with Groupon and how it works? Have you ever posted one of your great self-storage deals on there?

Here's the Chicago version, to which I am a subscriber because I'm local, but there are versions for many, many other cities across the U.S. (Metropolitan areas and suburbs included.)

Basically, Groupon is the intersection of social media and coupons. Most people today do not like coupon clipping, and fewer and fewer people subscribe to print newspapers. Instead, through a site like Groupon, consumers subscribe to daily e-mails for discounts on everything from fun things (amusement park admission, happy hour and restaurant deals) to very practical things (dentist appointments and oil changes).

I personally get daily e-mails and have purchased a Groupon three times. Friends of mine have purchased significantly more than that.

Groupon also has a competitor called Living Social, which I'm not as familiar with. Living Social doesn't appear to do as many of the practical-type deals, though, which is what self-storage facilities would be looking for.

The best part about Groupon from a business standpoint? It establishes urgency. Every deal that gets e-mailed out is only good for 24 hours, which means people have the urgency to buy soon or they miss the deal.

Yes I subscribe to both and have purchased on Living Social. There are some great and interesting deals and the urgency does make you want to buy now and use later. I find the most interesting ones for me are the food and activity deals.

I just subscribed to Groupon and it looks great. i had never heard of it before until I was at a club in Vegas at the SSA conference and someone over the music said something about 'do I groupon ?' EXCUSE ME!!!?!

I am considering it for storage.

Ok guys...how do you sign up for Groupon? and then after you sign up, is there info on the website on how you can become part of this with self-storage? This sounds like a great idea!
Have you ever stopped to think and forgotten to start again?

John, i have explored this a long time ago, about an hour or so, and I have passed this on to my area manager. It looks like the worst thing that could happen is that we get 500 new customers right away. duhhhh!!!!

Astro, we're in the same boat. Cashiers and Morgan Hill, just two lil blips in the universe, not deserving of any social rewards.

This stuff is just for them high-falutin' big city folks. Pa, did you feed them pigs yet? They's a squealin' so hard my haid is a hurtin'.

We have three facilities south of Boston. I contacted both Livingsocial and Groupon in regards to offering a storage deal on their sites a few months ago. Both were not interested at that time, but will try again as site grows.
Will keep you updated if they start offering to storage.

Thanks, Guardian. Please keep us posted. It would seem logical to me that a self-storage deal would work, but maybe they haven't warmed to the idea yet.

For everyone else, remember that this decision came only from the Boston reps for Groupon and Living Social. It might be a viable option in other cities, unless I'm misunderstanding what you said, Guardian.
