Hi John, For our second year, we are hosting a free Halloween Carnival we've titled "Sp00ktakular Jr Creepers Carnival". This year we are turning our climate controlled facility ground floor into a "Not So Scary Haunted House" and looking to host around 200 local children. My assistant manager and I put on a saftey skit as the wicked witch and Snow White, we have 10 carnival games and our local BBB will be doing face painting. We count on local businesses to donate snacks, candy and man power. We had so much fun last year, we have decided to make htis our "Big" annual event!

I simply love the idea of doing more community inspired events --- like the Halloween Carnival, etc. Can you tell me though, do you think it helps your business to do it? have you seen results?

Just curious to know if the fun of it all translates over to good promotion. Thanks for any input!

    Good Morning itsjustme,
I can't honestly measure that that single event garners revenue. But what I can tell you is that 2 years ago when I took over the management at this facility our occupancy was in the low 30's and now for over a year we have been in the high 90's. We actually spent 4 months this summer completely sold out! I believe that you just have to give back to the community that supports you and I want the community to think of our facility whenever and if ever they think of storage. Like a lot of you, I have 5 other facilities within a 5 mile radius of ours and they do nothing in the community. I've never met another storage manager at a chamber function of which I attend around 5 events every month. And I am absolutely blessed to have owners that support and encourage the ideas I have.
And besides, if you aren't having some fun at work your in the wrong business! Just my philosophy!

I agree 100%!! If we are all just cookie cutter versions of storage managers then why would anyone remember us at all? I always try to have fun and put my personality in to the job. I just haven't done much yet in terms of community stuff. We donate units and we try to know our neighbors and things like that, but we don't have a lot of money at our disposal for ads or marketing materials. I would love to get the approval to spend a little money on something like you guys are talking about, but so far its sort of been the understanding that until we are making money we cant spend any. Which to me seems backwards -- we need to spend the money to make it!

By the way, Good job on turning your place around! Sounds like the things you are doing are definitely working!
