Tips on selling retail products?
Give me some good tips for selling retail products in your self-storage operation? What works best for you?

Tell everybody that you talk to that you sell boxes and other packing supplies. I answer the phone with that in my greeting.

We suggest products to everyone who comes in and who calls. We try to help the customer with their needs before they know what their needs are. For instance, someone buys boxes, I always ask do they have tape, will they need paper or bubble wrap. I recommend sofa, chair and mattress covers to every customer. I sell locks by building the value in them and telling the customer they come with a lifetime guarantee (which they do!). Also it helps that they have to provide their own lock! One thing I have noticed: if a customer moves in on a special, they are more likely to buy products. I am not sure why, but they do. We also have a monthly newsletter that we email. In it we feature one product. For instance, in the summer, I double stock Damp Rid Buckets. This is a wonderful product for non-climate units and RV's! My RV Customers love it! Then I suggest home use for it also! Featuring one product per month and running a special on it, works beautifully! We also offer discounts for box packages. We have three different combos to offer starting as low as $15 which includes an assortment of boxes and tape. Creative displays and posters work well too.
