You are correct in saying that not everything works for everybody. What this whole place is about is new or different information from people that have tried different things. Just because something worked in San Antonio doesn't mean that it will work in Portland, Or. But, by the same token, it doesn't mean that it won't work, either.
The way I see it is to try everything that you think will help you, and most of the stuff you think won't. You might be surprised. We all tend to prejudge things and people, much to our own chagrin. ( I live and work in a very small town where you can't tell the players without a program. Manner of dress or type of car they drive really won't tell you a thing about the people here.) I have always felt that, maybe the volume of people past you place or through your door is, sometimes, luck of the draw. But if someone comes through you door and doesn't rent from you or buy ancillarys, then you haven't taken advantage of what you have. You and I determine the mood, atmosphere and, ultimately, the success or failure of our facility. So, I guess, after all of this blabber, try everything that you can to improve your business. Incidentally, just because something wasn't successful today, doesn't mean it won't be successful tomorrow. Keep on renting and learning. I read something the other day.
