Default Web based or stand alone - which is best?

Firstly, it depends upon the size and nature of your business.

Secondly, why are we all led to believe there are only 2 options? As if we can only have one or the other, whilst putting up with the shortcomings of our final choice, which ever it may be?

There is no doubt about it - sometimes a web based system is ideal. And sometimes a stand alone system is the best bet. But what do you do if you need full web functionality and you don't want the shortcomings of a web based system? What if you like to operate with a stand alone model but you need full web functionality too?

It seems that no-one wants to admit there is a third option that allows for full web functionality without having to put up with the short-comings and many dis-advantages brought about by web based (and thus web functional but web dependent) system or a stand alone system (without web functionality).

In fact, contrary to the bitter opinions commonly expressed amongst vendors your choice of software may be the least of your worries. It is the overall business system you employ that is truly important. What about choosing the right peripheral technologies for your business? What about being able to choose the best computer set up for your system - do you go with a client and server set up or something else? Which is best, Mac or PC? Do you go with Vista or XP? And why?

I will be doing my best to cover all this and more in a series of articles designed to help you to reduce your chances of being bamboozled with all the claptrap being spouted by techno-gurus trying to get you to buy their stuff. You do not have to go solely on the opinions and recommendations of salespeople or the avid disciples of some software brand, who know nothing of the finer details pertaining to your specific business. You should, instead, be able to form your own conclusions. And I want to arm you with the objective information you need so you can do this.

What is in it for me? Simple! I want to clear the air and make available all of the information you need to choose the solution that best fits you and your business.

Lets start with how your choice of web based software can potentially create a liability to your business where your customer database is concerned. It's time you were given some information. Here is some very good work from my colleague Ben Williams, COO, StorMan Pty Limited. And yes, his words apply here in the US as well. If you like what Ben has to share then you are welcome to email me and I will forward you the rest of the article series as it is released.

Hi Wayne ... Another user reported this post as being self-promoting for your company, and so I have edited out the "offensive" material. I do not have a problem with you sharing information here and thank you for being so forthcoming! I just want to remind you that we need to be careful about promoting specific products and services here. I will let the blog link stand because it looks like useful information for readers. Thanks again.
