    Default Are you a superstar?

We all know having a "can-do" attitude can get us further in the workplace. No one likes grumpy employees who make up excuses for why stuff doesn't ever get done.

I came across this article on MSN.com highlighting the "10 Attitudes of Successful Workers."

No surprise, high self-esteem, ambition and a positive attitude are on the list. Networking also plays a role.

What factors do you think make a super employee? Is it all about attitude and hard work? Or are some people more successful because of luck? See anything on this list you disagree with?

Amy, my personal favorite is #2---anything is possible. Love the reference to the Little Engine that Could...one of my kids favorite books and mine! My mom used to say "Can't never could". So many people say I can't....won't even try....all 10 are great!

And even the one I usually don't like #9 (tooting your own horn), I actually did today when my DM came by. I asked him did he see the rental area increase for the month of June on my Management Report...he said...no...I said would you like to? with a big smile...I showed him: Rented Area Increase of 6,020 sq ft. for the month of June (we're a new facility so we do have a ways to go--but I'm ok w/that as long as I'm steadily making progress)
I asked him was he happy w/that & he said yes....What will be hard is beating that kind of record...but with all 10 things mentioned...especially knowing that ANYONE is a potential referral/rental....

In a word (and not to #9) YES I am a superstar (and an overachiever when I want to be )

for the last 30 years every time I got a "job" I would tell myself "this time I am NOT going to be a manager - I only want to be a worker bee" within 6 months they are making outrageous offers for me to be a manager or supervisor.

Sometimes it can really suck when you don't want the responsibility, but you see that all the people around you are morons and you sure as heck don't want to work for one of them!!!

You scare me!We're too alike in many ways. Superstar when you want to be, but in another thread you admit to being lazy. Hmm, or is it that we're simply human?

Thanks, Peter!! I'm sure the $1 move-in special will garner us some tenants who won't stay long...but it's a little scary looking at the occupancy rate, when you're used to over 90%!! I just reached 35.8% area, so I do have a ways to go!

Wayne, I think we all have days that we push above & beyond (overachiever), but if you kept up that pace 365 days per year...you'd crash and burn!!!! That's exactly what I had to learn at my new site...I can't do everything (humanly impossible) in a few short months...so I set goals that realistically can be met...it's hard when you're staring at 265 units that need heavy duty cleaning....so my 1st goal was 3-5 units of each size clean, and work from there...then the weeds started calling me & I told my DM, sorry, not super-human---I need help here!!! (it's also hard for me to admit I need help....used to doing it all when possible). Wayne, you act like you're goofing off in your workshop but your prev. posts show that to be totally untrue!!! You make banners, & do things that improve your site for your owners which is awesome!

    Just my 2 cents!

I think I am a Super Star who sometimes needs added motivation to realize my full potential..lol Really, it takes a very special and commited person to do well as this job. I love it 7 years later and much of who I want to please are the Owners. I love who I work for and this drives me harder. I sometimes worry that I could do more/better and need motivation like many of us do. I say we are all Super Stars in our own right. Keep Smiling
    Lovin it.

Thanks Pat - and good luck with the numbers.

To Sandra --- I used to try and please (impress?) the owners -- now I just try to keep the tenants happy, make improvements (when money is available) and not burn myself out.

I treat this place as if I owned it - if I see something that needs fixing, cleaned or improved for safety, security or overall looks I do it.

If you have to wait to be told to fix or clean something you are in the wrong business.

    Just my .02¢

Yes, "asking" for praise is tough, especially when you just want to show someone that your hard work has finally paid off.

But there are many ways we can show our bosses what we've accomplished--in subtle ways. Pat's post is one good example. Perhaps you've moved a lot of merchandise lately, or sold more tenants in the past month. Don't be afraid to let your bosses know what a superstar you really are.

Wayne and Gina-- yep, some of us just can't be satisfied with giving 75% to anything, particularly our jobs.
