  • Chain Link Fence Perimeter Alarms? Just had our chain link fence cut

We just had our chain link fence cut for the first time in 15+ years. Vandals came and stole some catalytic converters off motors home in our yard.

Has anyone used any sort of perimeter alarm on a chain link fence? I see that there are alarms that you can put on a fence that will pick up vibrations when someone is messing with the fence or cutting it. We have about 1.25 miles of fence that we would need to cover and the system I'm looking at would be about $40,000. Was hoping to get some feedback or cheaper options before we dive in.

Just run an electric wire through the fencing, give them a nice little jolt LOL. Here's a link for one that's a "smart" electric fence. Alerts your phone and gives an audible alarm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sdFL3A4xhM

This is what we are currently looking at: https://www.rbtec.com/products/Fence...cladfencealarm It's one wire you run thru the fence and it will pick up vibrations. The included hardware will tie into our existing security/camera system and we can setup whatever alerts (phone/email/text) and alarms thru that.

A little jolt would be awesome. My SIL had an electric fence to keep her angus cattle in and that sucker packed a punch.
Even duct-tape can't fix stupid. But it can muffle the noises.

Some of you may know that I had chain link fence cut for the first time in 33 years just a couple of months ago. They got in and broke into a couple of my unalarmed, first phase units. Luckily, the tweakers realized what they had found was not worth enough to trade for drugs, so I recovered everything from the bushes outside the fence line and the tenants were very understanding.

My fix was to spend about $4k and add expanded metal over the top of my chain link, on the outside. Expanded metal is much tougher to cut through and doesn't allow for toe holds to climb over, but it would be EXTREMELY expensive for 1.25 miles of it at 4' per sheet (width). I added concertina wire at the top just to make it look more scary.

I was feeling pretty good about my upgrade, until the AT&T yard next door to me was broken into last week. I got the idea for the expanded metal from them, and from talking to their head security man. The bad guys used a sawzall to cut through the expanded metal and chain link, then proceeded to remove 10 catalytic converters from the AT&T service trucks.

So, I'm not feeling as secure as I was last week.

Unfortunately, I think this points to a real degradation in our citizenry. Drugs and lack of prosecution/jail time has emboldened bad guys to do whatever they'd like, and here in CA there's a 99% guarantee that I won't be carrying when/if I catch them.

This looks like a great idea for long runs.

We installed a parameter alarm. It does not work well. If a rodent or bird went by it the alarm went off all the time.
