  • Hiring new employees

We have been trying to hire a new assistant and not having much luck. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for me?

We have been using craigslist and Indeed, is there a better place we should posting our job listings?

I know a lot of business are struggling to fill positions but still thought I'd ask. We have been discussing increasing the hourly pay but at this point I'm not sure even that will help us much.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thank you!

It's just a really tough time to find help right now. Our parent company has gone from over 100 employees 18 months ago down to 47 as of Thanksgiving. Nobody is applying! It's too easy to be jobless right now.

Check out retirees in your area-maybe advertise at the local senior center (they've seen and done it all and many have great computer skills). You might have to get several part timers, close on Sundays and Mondays, whatever works right now.

As someone who just got back to working (bored at home) I was looking for 3 or 4 days a week but only found 2 days or full time. I went ahead and took the full time over a 2day job a mile from home just because 2 days a week simply wasn't enough to make working worthwhile.

Getting flexible on days and times could get someone interested that is just not willing to jump full force into the working world again.

I would also advise on flexibility with hours & days. Retired community or maybe even a college student as many class schedules are hybrid with online and in person. We have someone that comes in MWF mornings and another that comes in ThF afternoons & then I am full time.

Thank you all for your responses!

I currently have a couple of retirees with me and they are great! We are actually only looking to hire someone a few days a week to help out because my assistant wants to be able to travel.

I have posted at our local college before but I haven't tried any retirement communities, I'll have to look into that.

We are pretty flexible as far as the schedule goes but I think most people are looking for full time and we only need about 24 hours a week.

Seniors generally are looking for less than full time bc they're on social security or they don't want to claim ssn yet and want to get out of the house and have an income to supplement whatever retirement fund they have. Good luck!

Post it on glassdoor.com, indeed.com, all sources the more places you post the better odds you have at someone seeing it, hopefully this helps! I've had loads of applications come in from indeed!

Try local AARP and county's senior dept. There are usually local programs that help get retirees part time jobs or help them learn job skills. Can be a bit of a learning curve, but through AARP it's actually a reduced risk and they will cover the wages sometimes for a trial period -https://www.aarp.org/aarp-foundation/our-work/income/scsep/info-2014/hire-an-older-worker.html
