  • Suspicious Theft

So I had a customer call & tell me that someone broke into his storage unit with the specific time of 1/2 @ 5:48 pm to 1/5 @ 7:00 pm.
He never comes on the property but this one instance he was here he was broken into.
He said they cut the lock.

So I went back & looked at the camera footage & sure enough someone tried putting random gate codes in early in the morning & they ended up tailgating someone in & went right to the customer's unit with their license plate covered up.

When the customer called he asked if we compensate him for his loss, told him no & he needs to file a police report & I have the footage for the police.
Then I called him back after the camera findings & left a voicemail telling him the type of vehicle & to file a police report.
Its been two weeks now & the cops haven't shown up to take the video footage & customer hasn't called back regarding a police report.

Seems like it was targeted towards him because there were no other units that were broken into & the times customer came to the property someone just happens to break in.

Maybe it was him and he faked the theft

      That's what I'm thinking.
The truck had an out of state license plate as well as the customer. Only the last number was exposed on the plate & when I saw customer come back that night on the camera, the fonts looked similar. Was trying to get a good look at the person in the truck & customer to see if they had similar walks but it was hard to tell because the camera is a little far from his unit & when zooming in, its fuzzy.

Sounds like a scam. You have done what you are supposed to do. Its up to the tenant to file a report. I would suggest making disc locks mandatory to stop locks from being cut.

Nothing like a huge red flag thrown in there!
He is going to tell you the exact date and the exact time he KNEW that someone was breaking into his storage unit!!!

            Right?!
When he said that, my ears perked up & became immediately suspicious. Then when he asked if we reimbursed him for the losses, I was thinking, "Get the heck outta here!"

Unbelievable the gall some of these people have.

I've run into a lot of people that have two houses & nice vehicles that try to talk me down on the prices & say, "Well up north I pay $80 for a 10x10 unit." Sorry we are in Florida & we charge more, everything is higher here.

and my response would have been "Toto, we are not in Kansas anymore!"
