What Else Do You Rent/Could You Rent?

Rental trucks are obviously the biggest source of rental revenue for most storage facilities. But what other items do you rent (or could you rent) that will also bring in more dollars?

Let's brainstorm:

Dollies
Crates
Ladders
Power tools
Plastic covering
Space-savers
Space heaters (for people drying out from a flood or people who haven't been able to get their utilities turned on yet)

Other ideas?

We did the trucks and dollies for a while. It was great. Then the city told us to stop as we are zoned for the storage of household goods only. That made our stop business advertising too.

Pallets are a great add on to rent you can add 5-10 dollars per unit.

another add on is monthly billing, most facilities bill 3 months or more.

Some facilities have experimented with carpet cleaners and propane tanks.

Well I was hoping for my ideas on this thread! We rent trucks and dollies and moving pads. But we have toyed with the idea of an E-Bay store. They have a special program for self storage facilities. Has anyone tried it? And I am NOT talking about for Auction Units. I cannot tell you how many times tenants want to sell items or tenants are looking for items. I do know that the minimum value is $50 to list so that would weed out a lot of junk!! I would love to hear feedback!!

We "sort of" tried to rent shelves, it didn't work out very well for us. We purchased 4 large heavy duty shelving racks (think of one orange section of Home Depot shelving) and planned on renting them to interested parties. We assembled one inside a large unit to show the size and strength of the units. We planned on adding $5 to the monthly rent to have it installed.

No takers. Now we rent the 4 units with the storage shelves already installed at the same rate as an empty unit, and sometimes we have to remove them to get the rental. Periodically the storage of the unused shelving uses up a large portion of my personal garage space. , not to mention the labor of two men to disassemble them. I suppose that maybe a smaller shelving unit might be work better, but we just never get requests for shelving.

It's rare for us as well, but when we do, it's usually for four or more at $5 a pop per month. Silly, right?

It's pretty good for us to just have them available...just in case.
